Your Consumer Unit Is the Safety Heart of the House
The consumer unit, the fuse board, the fuse box: three names for the same thing, the panel that takes the incoming supply and splits it into the circuits that feed your home. It is also where the safety devices live, the RCDs and breakers that cut the power in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong.
An old rewireable fuse box with ceramic fuses has none of that protection. A first-generation plastic board can feed a fire rather than stop one. When a board is past its safe life, undersized, damaged, or fails an inspection, replacing it is the single biggest safety upgrade most Leeds homes will ever have.
We replace boards for homeowners, landlords and letting agents across the Leeds LS postcodes. Our office is in Bradford (BD18) and inner Leeds is roughly 25 to 35 minutes away on the A647 and A65. Every replacement is a fixed-price job, fitted to the current edition of BS 7671, tested, certified and notified to Building Control. No surprises on the invoice and no paperwork left hanging.
The Paperwork Matters as Much as the Board
Plenty of quotes promise a "certificate" without saying which one. When you sell, remortgage or let the property, the exact documents are what a solicitor, lender or council officer asks for. With us you get all of it, in writing, on the day.
- Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) signed by the installing engineer, the document that proves the new board was designed, installed and tested correctly.
- Building Regulations Part P notification submitted through our registration scheme, with the compliance certificate that follows.
- A fully labelled board so every circuit is clearly identified, not a row of unmarked breakers.
- A copy of the test results for the new installation, kept on our system and re-sent free if you lose yours.
RCBO as Standard, Not as an Upsell
Most Leeds quotes default to a cheaper dual RCD board and treat a full RCBO board as a premium add-on. We fit full RCBO as standard, because it is the better installation and it is what keeps the lights on when one circuit faults.
Old rewireable fuse box
Ceramic fuses, no RCD protection, a plastic or wooden enclosure. No protection against electric shock and a real fire risk if a connection works loose. If you still have one, this is the upgrade that matters most.
Dual RCD split board
The cheap modern option. Two shared RCDs each protect half the house. Compliant, but when one RCD trips it kills every circuit on that side, so a single fault in the kitchen can take out the upstairs lighting too.
Full RCBO board (what we fit)
Every circuit gets its own combined RCD and breaker. A fault on one circuit trips only that circuit, the rest of the house stays on. We fit these with a Type 2 surge protection device as standard. This is the recommended installation under the current 18th Edition of BS 7671.
When a Leeds Fuse Board Needs Replacing
You do not have to wait for a fault. Any one of these is a good reason to book a replacement, and several together means it is overdue.
- An old rewireable fuse box with ceramic fuses and no RCD.
- A board more than 20 years old, or a first-generation plastic unit.
- Breakers or fuses that trip or blow repeatedly for no clear reason.
- Any scorch marks, a burning smell, or buzzing at the board.
- A board flagged as a C2 (potentially dangerous) on an EICR.
- Adding a new kitchen, EV charger or extension that needs a spare way the board does not have.
Consumer Unit Replacement Prices in Leeds
Starting figures below, all + VAT. Every price includes the new board, the Electrical Installation Certificate, the Part P Building Regulations notification, full testing and a labelled board. We quote the whole job up front after a quick look, so the invoice matches the quote.
The Most Common EICR Remedial in Leeds
A failed or unsatisfactory EICR is the reason most landlord boards get replaced. An old board with no RCD protection is a textbook C2 (potentially dangerous), and the report cannot pass until it is fixed.
Private landlords and letting agents
Every tenanted property in Leeds needs a satisfactory EICR every five years under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020. When the report flags the board, we replace it, re-test, and return the EIC and a fresh report so the property is compliant for the next tenancy. Portfolio bookings get a single point of contact and per-property paperwork.
HMO and selective licensing in Leeds
Leeds City Council requires a satisfactory electrical inspection for HMO licences, and in selective licensing wards such as Beeston Hill, Holbeck and Harehills the same scrutiny applies to single lets. A board without RCD protection is a common reason a licence inspection stalls. We upgrade to full RCBO, label every circuit, and supply the certificate the licensing team will accept.
Fuse Board Replacement Across Leeds LS Postcodes
Our office is in Bradford BD18, roughly 25 to 35 minutes from inner Leeds. The older terrace belt through Armley, Burley, Harehills, Holbeck and the Headingley student streets still holds plenty of rewireable boards, and that is where most of our replacement work is.

Booking Confirmed
Date agreed, usually within the week. We confirm the board specification and any extras (bonding, meter tails) up front so the price is locked before we arrive.

- Manufacturer warranty on the board and devices, and we handle any claim for you.

Leeds Consumer Unit Questions Customers Ask
How much does a consumer unit replacement cost in Leeds?
A small board up to 6 circuits starts at £399 + VAT, a typical house board swap from £450 + VAT, and a full RCBO board with a Type 2 surge protection device from £550 + VAT. Larger homes with 12 or more circuits start from £650 + VAT. Every price includes the board, the Electrical Installation Certificate, the Part P notification, full testing and a labelled board. All prices exclude VAT. Upgrading old meter tails or main bonding can add to the price, and we confirm that before we start.
How long does it take and will I be without power all day?
Most board replacements take 4 to 8 hours. The power is off for the bulk of that time while we remove the old board, wire in the new one and test every circuit. We tell you the plan so you can work around it, and we aim to restore power as soon as testing allows. If remedial faults are found during testing they are quoted separately and may need a follow-up visit.
Are you actually based in Leeds?
Our office is in Bradford (BD18), not Leeds, and we cover every Leeds LS postcode from there. Inner Leeds is roughly 25 to 35 minutes away on the A647 and A65, so we reach Headingley, Armley, Harehills, Holbeck and the rest quickly, without the overhead of a city-centre office. That keeps our board prices keen.
Do I legally have to replace my consumer unit?
There is no blanket law forcing every homeowner to upgrade. But if you are adding circuits, fitting an EV charger, or an inspection finds a C1 or C2 code, the board must be brought up to the current standard before the work can be certified. Landlords have tighter duties: a tenanted Leeds property must hold a satisfactory EICR, and a board that fails the report has to be put right.
Is a plastic consumer unit now illegal in Leeds?
An existing plastic board does not have to be ripped out just because it is plastic, provided it passes inspection. But since 2016 any new or replacement domestic board must have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means a metal one. So if your plastic box is being swapped out, the replacement will be metal by regulation.
Do I need RCBOs or is an RCD split board good enough?
Both are compliant under the 18th Edition of BS 7671, but we fit full RCBO boards as standard. With a dual RCD split board, one tripped RCD takes out half the house. With a full RCBO board, a fault trips only the affected circuit and everything else stays on. The cost difference is modest and the day-to-day benefit is real, which is why we make it the default rather than an upsell.
Will I get a certificate after the work, and which one?
Yes, two documents. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) signed by the installing engineer, which proves the new board was designed, installed and tested correctly. And a Building Regulations Part P notification submitted through our registration scheme, with the compliance certificate that follows. Both are what a solicitor, lender or council officer will ask for, so insist on them from any electrician.
Do I need a surge protection device fitted?
In most cases yes. The current 18th Edition of BS 7671 requires a Type 2 surge protection device at the board on most new domestic installations, unless the owner formally declines it in writing. An SPD protects your appliances and electronics against voltage spikes. We fit one as standard on our full RCBO boards, so it is built into the price rather than added later.
