What a Home EV Charger Install Involves

A Safe, Dedicated 7kW Charge Point for Your Leeds Home

A home charger turns your parking space into the cheapest fuel station you will ever use. Charging overnight on an EV tariff costs a fraction of a public rapid charger, and most Leeds drivers without a home point pay roughly £1,000 a year more to keep the same car on the road.

A proper installation is more than bolting a box to the wall. We survey the property, run a dedicated 32A circuit from your consumer unit, fit the open-PEN protection the regulations require for an outdoor charge point, mount and commission your smart 7kW charger, test the whole installation to BS 7671, notify Northern Powergrid, and hand you the Electrical Installation Certificate. Most standard installs are done in 2 to 4 hours.

We are based in Bradford and cover every Leeds LS postcode, from the suburban driveways of Alwoodley and Horsforth to the terraced streets of Headingley and Armley. Inner Leeds is roughly 25 to 35 minutes from our BD18 base, and every job starts with an honest survey rather than a one-size quote.

The 2026 Grant, Explained Honestly

Is There Still a Government Grant for a Home EV Charger?

Most installer pages still quote the old £350 figure or ignore the grant. Here is the accurate position for 2026, so you know before you call whether you qualify.

No

Homeowner living in a house with a driveway: no grant

The old homeowner scheme (EVHS) closed in April 2022 and was not replaced for owner-occupiers. If you own and live in a house with off-street parking, there is no government grant in 2026. Be wary of any installer who tells you otherwise.

£500

Renters and flat owners: up to £500

If you rent your home, or own and live in a flat, the EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost up to £500 per socket. The cap rose from £350 to £500 in April 2026 and the scheme is funded to March 2027. It is claimed through an OZEV approved installer. We will tell you whether you qualify and how to claim.

£500

No off-street parking: up to £500

There is a separate grant of up to £500 per socket for households with no off-street parking, where a cross-pavement cable channel is installed (see the next section). This is the one that fits much of inner Leeds. Highways permission is needed first.

£500

Landlords: up to £500 per socket

Private and social landlords can claim up to £500 per socket on residential rental properties, across as many as 200 sockets a year. The grant is claimed through an OZEV approved installer.

No Driveway? Leeds Has a Real Answer

Charging an EV in a Leeds Terrace With No Off-Street Parking

Leeds is a city of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and back-to-backs. Streets across Headingley, Hyde Park, Burley, Beeston and Armley are full of homes with no driveway, and a standard wallbox plus the old grant both assume off-street parking. Leeds is now one of the first cities in Yorkshire to do something about it.

Leeds City Council has launched a cross-pavement charging scheme that lets a recessed cable channel be set into the footway, so a terraced home can charge from its own supply without a cable trailing across the pavement. Paired with the up-to-£500 on-street household grant, it makes home charging possible for tens of thousands of Leeds homes that were locked out before.

Leeds cross-pavement charging, in plain terms. You apply to the council, they assess your street, and if it is suitable a cable channel is fitted across your pavement edge. There is an application and assessment fee, a channel installation cost, and a small ongoing licence, and approval is not guaranteed. We install the home side to NICEIC standard once the channel is approved. See Leeds City Council's EV charging page for the current scheme details and costs.

A quick eligibility check: a pavement directly outside your home, a power route from the ground floor, no grass verge in the way, and a reasonable cable run. If your street is not suitable we will say so plainly rather than take a deposit for something that cannot be used.

Choosing Your Charger

Which EV Charger Should You Choose?

All new home chargers must be 7kW smart chargers by law, so the choice comes down to how you want to charge. These are the units we fit most often in Leeds homes. We are brand independent and recommend the right one for your setup.

Ohme

Best if you are on a smart EV tariff such as Octopus Intelligent Go. Ohme talks directly to the tariff and schedules charging into the cheapest overnight hours automatically, which is where the real savings come from.

Zappi by myenergi

Best if you have or plan to add solar panels. Zappi can charge your car from surplus solar power rather than the grid, so daytime charging can cost you almost nothing on a sunny Leeds afternoon.

Hypervolt and Wallbox

Best for a clean, simple, good-looking charger with a solid app. Reliable all-rounders for the household that just wants to plug in overnight. Tethered or untethered to suit your parking.

Frequently Asked

Leeds EV Charger Questions Customers Ask

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in Leeds?

A standard 7kW install starts at £749 + VAT where you supply the unit or choose a basic charger. A smart charger supplied and fitted starts around £999 + VAT, a solar-ready charger around £1,149 + VAT, and an install needing a consumer unit upgrade from £1,200 + VAT. Every price includes the dedicated circuit, isolator, open-PEN protection, testing, Northern Powergrid notification and certificate. All prices exclude VAT. Renters, flat owners, landlords and no-driveway households may take up to £500 off through the EV chargepoint grant.

I live in a Leeds terrace with no off-street parking. Can I still charge at home?

Possibly, and Leeds is ahead of most cities here. Leeds City Council runs a cross-pavement charging scheme that fits a recessed cable channel into your pavement so you can charge from your own supply. There is an application and assessment fee, a channel installation cost, and a small annual licence, and approval depends on your street. The up-to-£500 on-street household grant can help with the cost. We install the home side to NICEIC standard once a channel is approved, and we will tell you honestly if your street is not suitable.

Is there still a government grant for a home EV charger in 2026?

It depends who you are. Homeowners who own and live in a house with a driveway get no grant: the old homeowner scheme ended in April 2022. Renters, flat owners, landlords, and households with no off-street parking who install a cross-pavement channel can claim up to £500 per socket. The grant must be claimed through an OZEV approved installer.

Do I need a new fuse box before I can have a charger fitted?

Not always. A modern consumer unit with spare capacity and RCD protection is usually fine. A 7kW charger needs its own dedicated 32A radial circuit with the correct RCD protection and, on the PME supplies common in Leeds, open-PEN protection under BS 7671 Section 722. Before we quote we run a load assessment against your main service fuse. If your board is full or outdated it needs upgrading first, which we flag at the survey.

Do you notify Northern Powergrid about my charger?

Yes, we handle it. A home charge point must be notified to your Distribution Network Operator, which in Leeds is Northern Powergrid. For a single 7kW charger on a standard supply this is usually a notification we submit after the work, with no action needed from you. Larger or multiple-charger loads may need prior approval, and we manage that.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most standard home installs take 2 to 4 hours, with your power staying on for most of it. A longer cable run, a wall or floor penetration, or a consumer unit upgrade can extend that. We confirm the timing at the survey so you know what to expect on the day.

Does my new charger have to be a smart charger?

Yes. Under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, every new home charger installed in Great Britain must be a smart charger that can schedule charging, respond to the grid and default to off-peak times. This is what lets you charge in the cheapest overnight hours.

Which EV charger brand should I choose?

We are brand independent. Ohme is strongest if you are on a smart tariff like Octopus Intelligent Go. Zappi by myenergi is best if you have solar panels, as it can charge your car from surplus solar. Hypervolt and Wallbox are reliable, good-looking all-rounders. We recommend the right unit for your setup after the survey, not the one with the best margin.
