Electrician Pudsey
Domestic and commercial electrical work across Pudsey, Farsley, Stanningley, Calverley and Rodley. LS28 is not one place and it was not built in one century, so the answer to "what is wrong with my wiring" changes with the township you are in. We work from figures, not assumptions, and we are five and a half miles up the road.

LS28 Is Six Townships That Never Merged
Pudsey was a borough in its own right before Leeds took it in, and it sits with Farsley, Stanningley, Calverley, Fulneck and the New Pudsey side inside one postcode district between two cities. Most trade websites treat that as one area with one kind of house. It is not. The Office for National Statistics splits LS28 into six statistical neighbourhoods, the Valuation Office Agency publishes the age of every dwelling in each, and the spread between them is wide.
House type does the same. Terraced housing is 40.7% of Farsley South and Stanningley and 11.4% of New Pudsey, against 25.0% across Leeds. New Pudsey is 61.3% semi-detached, well clear of the 37.5% Leeds figure.
So when somebody asks what the wiring is like "in Pudsey", the useful answer is a question back: which end? A pre-1919 house in Stanningley and a 1958 semi off the New Pudsey side are two different jobs.
The Pre-1919 Half Sits in Farsley, Stanningley and Calverley
If you own a house in Farsley, Stanningley or Calverley village, the odds that it went up before the First World War are roughly one in four, higher than anywhere else we work in West Leeds. Farsley South and Stanningley carries another 21.7% built between 1945 and 1954, so much of the rest is early postwar rather than modern. What that means on site:
- The original circuits are long gone, the routes are not. A house of that age has been wired three or four times, each generation following the holes the last one drilled.
- Rubber and fabric insulation still appears. Rarely on the main circuits, but in loft lighting, outhouses and old immersion feeds. It goes brittle, and we look for it early.
- Earthing that predates the current rules. Main protective bonding to the incoming water and gas is often undersized or absent in a house never fully inspected.
- Outbuildings on an afterthought supply. Workshops, stores and detached garages fed by whatever cable was to hand.
None of that is unsafe by definition. Age is not a fault code. It does mean an inspection here usually finds more to talk about than one in a house from the 1990s, and a quote for extra circuits has to allow for the routing rather than assume it.
New Pudsey Is Where the Mill Town Story Falls Apart
Search for anything about Pudsey wiring and you will be told the area is a Victorian mill town of old terraces. Across a good part of LS28 that is fair. Across New Pudsey it is wrong, by a wide margin.
New Pudsey has 5.6% pre-1919 housing. Two thirds of it, 65.2%, went up in two bands: 34.5% between 1930 and 1939 and 30.7% between 1955 and 1964. Terraced is 11.4%, semi-detached 61.3%, social renting 3.8% against 20.4% for Leeds.
That is a different electrical proposition. An interwar or early postwar semi held by one or two families since it was built tends to have:
- One rewire in its history, done between the 1970s and the 1990s. Sound enough to still be running, old enough to predate the protection now expected on socket circuits.
- Sockets counted for a household that owned a radio. Two per room was generous in 1958. Extension leads are how these houses have coped since.
- A kitchen replaced twice, each time adding load to a circuit never resized.
- A garage or a drive. All six LS28 neighbourhoods sit below the 28.7% Leeds average for households without a car. Off-street parking is normal here rather than a luxury, which matters for anything fitted outside.
Five and a Half Miles, and What That Honestly Buys You
On every other area page on this site we make the same concession: we are a Bradford business, not from round here, and we would rather say so. Pudsey is the one place where the honest answer comes out differently.
Our workshop is at 4 Forestdale Way, Shipley, Bradford BD18 1QP. From there to Pudsey town centre is about 5.5 miles by road, roughly sixteen minutes, the shortest road distance of any area we cover. Leeds city centre and Hyde Park are both around 10.3 miles from us, and Roundhay is 11.9. Two things we will not say, because neither would be true.
- We are not based in Pudsey. Our address is in Shipley and it stays in Shipley. There are electricians with LS28 addresses, and if knocking on their door matters most, that is reasonable. We will not dress a Bradford postcode up as a local one.
- We are not claiming Pudsey is dramatically closer than everywhere else. Horsforth is 5.9 miles from the same door and, on a good run, we get there a minute quicker. Pudsey is the shortest distance. It is not in a class of its own.
What the distance changes is practical. A short run means we can look at a job the same week, come back to finish without it costing you a second call-out, and return quickly if a snag turns up.
What the Planning Map Says About Your LS28 Address
Three rule sets get confused with each other in West Leeds, and being told the wrong one costs people money. Here is where LS28 stands. Boundaries follow council mapping rather than street lines, so check your own address.
Article 4: LS28 sits outside it
Leeds City Council's Article 4 direction removes permitted development rights for turning a family house into a small shared house, and it covers a large slice of inner Leeds. We tested 24 real LS28 postcodes across both wards against the published planning boundary data, and every one came back outside it. Control postcodes in Roundhay, central Leeds and Horsforth correctly came back inside in the same run. So the extra planning step that catches landlords in LS6 and LS8 does not catch LS28. It removes nothing else: building regulations, the five-yearly inspection duty on rented homes and licensing for larger shared houses all apply here as everywhere in England.
Selective licensing: not in the designated wards, but confirm it
Leeds City Council designated selective licensing areas covering roughly 12,500 homes across parts of Armley, Beeston and Holbeck, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill, Hunslet and Riverside, Gipton and Harehills, and Farnley and Wortley. Neither Pudsey ward nor Calverley and Farsley ward is on that list. Schemes get reviewed and extended, and we have not read the council's own postcode schedule, so treat this as a strong indication rather than a ruling.
Conservation areas: four of them, in one postcode district
LS28 contains four designated conservation areas, unusual for a single postcode district. We confirmed each by testing real postcodes against the published boundary polygons:
- Pudsey. Postcodes including LS28 7BR, LS28 7EW, LS28 8AB and LS28 9AA tested inside.
- Pudsey and Fulneck. A separate designation of its own, covering the Moravian settlement. LS28 8NT tested inside.
- Farsley. LS28 5LY, 5HA, 5DL, 5AY and 5DB tested inside.
- Calverley. LS28 5NQ, 5PE, 5RQ and 5QP tested inside.

All servicesTownship by Township, From Calverley Down to Stanningley
Each of these is a distinct place with its own housing profile, and knowing which one you are in tells us most of what we need.
Calverley
In the neighbourhood the ONS calls Calverley and Farsley North: the oldest profile in LS28, the most settled at 77.4% owner-occupied, and the least likely to be without a car at 13.8%. It has a conservation area of its own.
Farsley
Split between two neighbourhoods in the statistics, with Town Street and the older core inside the Farsley conservation area. On the Farsley South and Stanningley side, 40.7% of homes are terraced, the highest share in the postcode district.
Stanningley
Shares that neighbourhood and its numbers, including only 9.4% built since 1993. The least renewed stock in LS28, which usually means original layouts, original cable routes and, often, no inspection on record.
Pudsey town centre and the east
Market Place and Church Lane sit in the Pudsey South East neighbourhood: 19.9% pre-1900, 36.4% terraced and 15.5% purpose-built flats, the highest flat share in LS28. It is also the least car-owning part of the district at 23.5% of households. Much of it falls inside the Pudsey conservation area.
Fulneck and the south west
The newest neighbourhood in LS28, with 20.5% built in 2009 or later against 12.0% for Leeds. Fulneck has a conservation area of its own, separate from Pudsey's.
New Pudsey and the north east
New Pudsey is the interwar and postwar suburb: 61.3% semi-detached, 74.3% owner-occupied, 3.8% social rented. Pudsey North East is different again, 43.5% built between 1945 and 1964 and 24.1% social renting, the highest in LS28.

Questions From Pudsey and the Villages Around It
Are you actually based in Pudsey?
No. Our workshop is at 4 Forestdale Way, Shipley, Bradford BD18 1QP. What is true is that Pudsey is about 5.5 miles from that door, roughly sixteen minutes by road, the shortest road distance of any area we cover. There are electricians with LS28 addresses and preferring one of those is fair enough. We are close enough that coming back to finish or fix something is straightforward.
Do you cover Farsley, Stanningley and Calverley as well as Pudsey?
Yes, all of LS28, plus Rodley on the LS13 border. Farsley, Stanningley and Calverley are not add-ons. They are a large part of the work we do here, and on average they have older housing than Pudsey itself. We also cover Bramley, Horsforth and Rawdon.
How old is the wiring likely to be in a Stanningley house?
Older than most of LS28. The neighbourhood covering Farsley South and Stanningley has 27.6% of its housing built before 1919 and only 9.4% built since 1993. That does not tell you when the wiring was last replaced, because most houses of that age have been rewired at least once. It does tell you the layout, the cable routes and the earthing were designed for a different era, which is why an inspection here usually turns up more to discuss.
Is my part of LS28 in a conservation area?
It might be. There are four in LS28: Pudsey, Pudsey and Fulneck, Farsley and Calverley. Boundaries follow council mapping rather than whole streets, so a house can be inside while one nearby is outside. Being in one restricts permitted development rights for some external works. The council's published list names cladding and rendering, satellite dishes and masts, chimneys and flues, and solar panels. It does not name general electrical work, so anyone telling you that you need planning permission for an outside light is going beyond the guidance.
Does the Leeds Article 4 direction apply in Pudsey?
No. We tested 24 real LS28 postcodes across both the Pudsey and the Calverley and Farsley wards against the published planning boundary data, and every one came back outside the Article 4 direction, with controls in Roundhay, central Leeds and Horsforth correctly coming back inside. So the extra planning permission step that catches landlords in parts of inner Leeds does not catch LS28. Everything else still applies, and boundaries do change, so check your own address.
Does selective licensing cover Pudsey?
Pudsey ward and Calverley and Farsley ward are not among the wards Leeds City Council designated for selective licensing, which cover parts of Armley, Beeston and Holbeck, Hunslet and Riverside, Gipton and Harehills, and Farnley and Wortley. We would still rather you confirmed that with the council, because schemes are reviewed and extended. Mandatory licensing for larger shared houses applies everywhere regardless.
What does it cost to get someone out to a fault in LS28?
£95 + VAT for the first hour, which covers getting to you and diagnosing the fault, then £65 + VAT per hour if the work runs on. Most tripping and dead-socket faults are traced inside that first hour. We tell you what the repair will cost before we start it. Out-of-hours and weekend work is quoted before we attend.
Where are your inspection and testing prices?
On our fixed wire testing page for Pudsey, which sets out the full ladder by property size along with what the report covers. We keep those prices in one place rather than scattering versions of them across the site. For installation, maintenance and reactive call-outs in LS28, see our electrical installation and maintenance page for Pudsey.
My house is a 1950s semi near New Pudsey. Does it need anything doing?
Possibly nothing urgent, and we will say so if that is the answer. New Pudsey is 65.2% built across two bands, 1930 to 1939 and 1955 to 1964, so a house of that age is the local norm rather than a warning sign. What we usually find is a rewire done decades ago that still works but predates the protection now expected on socket circuits, plus too few sockets and a kitchen that has gained load over two refits.
Can you handle work for a business or a rented property in LS28?
Yes. Between roughly one in seven and one in five LS28 homes are privately rented depending on the neighbourhood. Landlord and commercial testing is covered on our Pudsey testing page, and maintenance and minor works on our Pudsey installation and maintenance page. If you manage several LS28 addresses, tell us how many and we will price them together.
